What’s coming? Change is coming.

On June 30, the country will witness another milestone – the transfer of power from President Benigno Aquino III to the 16th President of the Republic, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. To pay tribute to the historic win of Duterte, The Standard will publish a special supplement to welcome his administration. Entitled “Welcome, President Duterte,” the said special will focus on the many issues that the incoming administration will face and address in the next six years.

Is change really coming with the election of Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as president of the Philippines? Or is he just reinforcing the “macho” image of the man on the street popularized by former president Joseph Estrada and dozens of action movie and teleserye heroes? As early as a few days after the election, he was already accused of political payback when he contemplated the appointment of his campaign supporters to Cabinet and other appointive positions. His attitude towards many social concerns has been criticized as barbaric and medieval.

We want to be at the forefront in exploring the issues that surround the incoming President, as well as issues that were discussed on the campaign trail, the presidential debates broadcast on radio, TV and the Internet and written about and commented on in print and on websites and blogs.

  1. Offering Cabinet posts to Communists
  2. Wants to revive death penalty
  3. Pushes federal form of government
  4. Foreign policy
  5. Views on religion, anti-Catholic statements
  6. The Punisher: Davao death squad
  7. Views on women
  8. Views on cultural minorities, LGBT

Let our nation that voted for change give a warm welcome to the new leadership. Change has finally arrived.
