Aldeguer: Nietes-Estrada duel not a done deal yet

THE planned title fight between World Boxing Organization junior flyweight champion Donnie Nietes and WBO/World Boxing Association flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California on Sept. 24 is not a done deal yet.

ALA Promotions’ president Michael Aldeguer, who motored to Los Angeles to meet with Zanfer Promotions’ Fernando Beltran, informed The Standard: “We were supposed to meet with Zanfer today in LA (July 13) but it didn’t happen.”

This is rather typical of Zanfer from past experiences of The Standard.

“The Nietes-Estrada is still 50-50 as we have not discussed the details yet and we still need to wait for an official word from the Estrada camp. There could still be a possibility that it could be Moises Fuentes or another opponent. We hope to hear from Zanfer in the next few days,” said Aldeguer.

Fuentes is the mandatory challenger, but Zanfer had tentatively agreed to allowing Estrada, who is also his fighter, to face Nietes, who wants to move up in weight.

Meanwhile, Filipino flyweight Jether “The General”  Oliva is  favored to beat Pakistan’s comparatively inexperienced Muhammad Waseem when they clash for the World Boxing Council flyweight Silver title at the Millenium Seoul Hilton in South Korea on Sunday.

Waseem is expected to have a puncher’s chance against Oliva since the Pakistani fighter has won all his three bouts by knockouts.

However, the WBC reported that Waseem “will have the toughest fight of his career” when he faces the 30-year-old Oliva, who has a record of 24-5-2 with 11 knockouts.

Waseem is coming off a sixth-round TKO win over Indonesia’s experienced  John Bajawa in a scheduled eight-round super flyweight bout last March 19 in Seoul.

Oliva has had two unanimous decision losses against world-rated Pedro Guevara, the former WBC champion and Zolani Tete, the current IBF International bantamweight champion.
