Nietes ready to fight for fly crown

DONNIE Nietes, the longest-reigning Filipino champion, told the Manila Standard he fears no one in the ring.

“I’ll fight anybody for the flyweight title,” said Nietes Wednesday morning upon his arrival from Los Angeles following his impressive debut at 112 pounds, where he scored a shutout 120-108 decision over former world light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico at the StubHub Center on Sunday morning.

Nietes arrived with trainers Edmund and Edito “Ala” Villamor, bantamweight King Arthur Villanueva, who scored a spectacular second-round knockout in a rematch with Juan Jimenez, and Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo, who dropped late substitute Robles twice en route to an easy 12-round unanimous decision.

Ranked No.1  by the WBO in the flyweight division, Nietes said the title fight would depend on the plans of Michael Aldeguer and renowned boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.

He, however, thinks the plan of the younger Aldeguer is to go for a title shot against the winner of the title eliminator between Zou Shiming of China, who is ranked No. 2 and Thailand’s Kwanpichit Onesongchair Gym, who is rated No. 3.

The Freddie Roach-trained Zou beat Kwanpichit handily in their first meeting in November 2014, although he ended up with a severely swollen left eye.
