So splits point with Indian GM in Altibox Norway chess

FILIPINO grandmaster Wesley So played to another safe draw in Round 5 of the ongoing Altibox Norway Chess 2017 at the Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger, Norway.

The 23-year-old So split his point with Indian GM Viswanathan Anand in 33 moves of another Guioco Piano game.

Anand kept a tight watch on the queenside after the black-playing So advanced a pawn to b4.

Later, a series of exchanges took place at the b5 square, leaving both players with just three pawns when it was over.

So finished with a total of 2.5 points in a four-way tie for third place with Fabiano Caruana, Sergei Karjakin and Anish Giri.

GM Hikaru Nakamura stayed in the solo lead with 3.5 points.

That’s after he drew with Vladimir Kramnik in 49 moves of a Sicilian Defense.

Levon Aronian and Kramnik are second with three points.

Aronian failed to move ahead after he split the point with Maxime Vachier Lagrave in 38 moves of a Ruy Lopez.

Caruana drew with Karjakin in 73 moves of Petrov, while Giri played world no. 1 Magnus Carslen to a draw in 41 moves of a Guioco Piano.
