Weather may improve Sunday as ‘Gorio’ exits

Improved weather may prevail in the country beginning Sunday, with authorities expecting severe tropical storm “Gorio” (international name “Nesat”) to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

“Gorio,” expected to exit the country en route to Taiwan, continues enhancing the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ which is dumping rains in Luzon and Western Visayas, said weather forecaster Lori dela Cruz from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

“Such enhancement of ‘habagat’ will increasingly lessen as “Gorio” leaves PAR and moves away from the country,” she said.

But a high-pressure area may be in the country anew next week—further raising prospects for better weather in the country, she continued.

Until  “Gorio“ exits PAR, however, Dela Cruz said the enhanced ‘habagat’ might still bring moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall this weekend in Luzon’s western section.

Western Visayas and the rest of Luzon may experience light to moderate rains, she continued.

In its Severe Weather Bulletin 9 released Friday, Pagasa located “Gorio” at 360 km east of Batanes’ capital Basco as of 10 a.m. of the same day.

“Gorio” then packed maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near its center and gustiness of up to 130 kph, said Pagasa.

Tropical cyclone warning signal 1 still prevails in Batanes as Pagasa earlier forecast 30 kph to 60 kph winds.

Government may cancel such signal this Sunday if conditions there already warranted such action, dela Cruz said.

Pagasa forecast “Gorio” to be 220 km north-northeast of Basco by Saturday morning.
