A refreshing way to start a healthy habit

In today’s fast-paced world where Filipinos have grown accustomed to eating heartily at the expense of health, it is not uncommon for one to know a friend or neighbor who suffers from a chronic disease.

Research has shown that Filipinos are significantly behind the suggested daily intake of important food groups like fruits and vegetables. While 70 percent of locals fail to meet their Estimated Average Requirement for nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin A, Filipinos only eat 39 percent of the daily 400 grams of fruits and vegetables suggested by the World Health Organization. Without important naturally occurring nutrients from fruits—such as polyphenols from Concord grapes—individuals are exposed to risks of lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disorders.

“Problems of the heart are often caused by unhealthy eating habits. A healthy diet—which consists of a variety across food groups, from fruits and vegetables to meats, fish, dairy to cereals and rootcrops—provides the body with the right amount of nutrients to function well. Equally important, the individual also needs to control intake of substances such as fats, oils, sugar and salt,” explains, Ma. Paz L. Sales, Board of Director of the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP), a leading professional organization and advocate of promoting healthy diet among Filipinos.

Recenty, the Department of Health held the Nutrition Month under the theme, “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit—for Life,” nutritionist-dieticians encourage Filipino families to start adopting better eating habits by making the shift a gradual process—for instance, one glass of healthy Concord grape juice at a time.

Juice from Concord grapes is an excellent source of nutrients. Grapes carry a naturally occurring nutrient in their skin called polyphenols, the same substance that make red wine helpful for the heart. Different from ordinary grapes, the heart-healthy Concord grapes grow much thicker skins that provide greater amounts to the body. In an experiment, the Concord grapes’ naturally occurring sugar was also found to lead a lower glycemic response than sugar sweetened beverage, contributing to a satisfactory long-term health.

With Welch’s 100 percent grape juice products widely available in retail outlets in the Philippines, families now have an internationally proven choice that tastes great and benefits the heart and health in the long-term. An advocate of better nutritional choice for families, Welch’s provides a wide range of healthy juice products that are refreshing to the palate and the body.

“In over 140 years, the Welch’s grape juice products have been providing a better source of important natural nutrients to customers as we deliver a happy balance of goodness and deliciousness. We are excited to become an instrument towards a healthier Filipino community,” says Erika Rodriguez, VP Marketing of Welch’s Philippines.
