President Rodrigo Duterte is set to join a program in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City for the retirement of AFP Chief of Staff Eduardo Ano on Thursday.

He is set to turn 56, which is the mandatory retirement age for military officials.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon says, the President is making up his mind on who the next AFP Chief of Staff will be.

The candidates are led by Western Mindanao Command Chief Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez.

Galvez led the operations against Maute terrorists in Marawi City.

He belongs to Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1985.

Other choices include Eastern Mindanao Command Chief Lieutenant General Leonardo Rey Guerrero (PMA Class 1984); Lieutenant General Melchor Mison Jr. (PMA Class 1984) and Deputy Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Narciso Vingson Jr. (PMA Class of 1985).

Their names were recommended by the AFP Board of Generals.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana submitted the list to the President.
