DENR cites schools

AS part of the celebration of the National Environmental Awareness month, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has cited “most sustainable and eco-friendly schools of 2017.”

Metodio Turbella, DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau director, said the search was part of the Philippine initiative in support to the Association Southeast Nations 50th year celebration with the theme “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World.”

The National Environmental Awareness Month this November 2017 with the theme “Kilos Para sa Klima: Building Climate-Resilient Philippines” and EMB will recognize the national winners of the 2017 national search for sustainable and eco-friendly schools in awarding ceremonies set at the SM City North Edsa in Quezon City.

The competition that started in 2009 and currently in its fifth leg as an every two year activity is organized by the EMB, along with the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education and the private sector partners.

  “We were amazed by their creativity and their commitment in implementing eco-friendly practices,” Turbella said.

   “We need to start teaching our kids as early as we can to take responsibility in safeguarding our environment. Schools are dynamic focal points of learning and powerful vehicles of change. Parents and teachers can work together to spread the wonders of living an environmentally-smart lifestyle.”

     For the elementary school category, the national winners are Payao Elementary School in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental (first place), Bintawan South Elementary School in Villaverde, Nueva Vizcaya (second place), and Katangawan Central Elementary School in General Santos City (third place).

For the high school category, the national winners are Divisoria High School in Santiago City, Isabela (first place), Muntinlupa National High School in Muntinlupa City (second place), and Pinsao National High School in Baguio (third place).

As far as the college category is concerned, Don Mariano Marco Memorial State University-North La Union Campus in Bacnotan, La Union

won first place, Western Philippines University in Aborlan, followed by Palawan as second placer and Naval State University in Biliran as

third placer.
