PRRC hunts source of illegal discharge of wastewater in Marikina River

The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) is conducting a thorough investigation of the alleged illegal discharge of wastewater in Marikina River.

The operation came as soon as PRRC officers were tagged to the Facebook viral video posted by Abdusalla, Monakil, a concerned netizen, showing a noticeable chemical discharge – evidence of liquid waste pollution – to the Marikina River. As of this posting, the video has been shared by over 14,000 netizens.

Since Marikina River is a major tributary of the Pasig River, PRRC Executive Director Jose Antonio E. Goitia, ordered for an immediate investigation to track down the violators accountable for the alleged illegal discharge of wastewater in Marikina River.

Executive Director Goitia, together with Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), are now collaborating for immediate inspection to some establishments that were reported to have been polluting the river to determine if they are compliant with the regulations.

He added that PRRC will exhaust all administrative and legal actions to make sure that commercial establishments and industries polluting our rivers will be closed.

He also emphasized that the efforts in protecting the waterways should have the support of all local government units (LGUs) along the river.

Furthermore, PRRC has been collecting large volumes of solid waste floating from the Manila Bay to the Pasig River- an indication of the tidal shift in the river brought by the summer season.
