UMak hits 80% passing rate in nursing boards

The University of Makati posted an 80.65 percent passing rate in the recent Nurse Licensure Examination after 25 out of 31 examinees from its College of Allied Health Studies (COAHS) passed, the city government announced Thursday.

Mayor Abigail Binay said she was proud of the latest achievement of the city-run university, which she regarded as “a validation of the city’s strong commitment to educational excellence.”

“I am proud to note that aside from an impressive overall passing rate that is way above the national rate, all 24 first-time board takers succeeded,” she said.

The Professional Regulation Commission has reported that 5,059 out of 9,691 examinees nationwide passed the said board exam, or a 52.2 percent passing rate.

The city chief executive also encouraged the new nurses to apply at the Ospital ng Makati (OsMak) where they can hone their skills and, at the same time, be of service to city residents.

Based on a list provided by the COAHS Center of Nursing at UMak, the 25 newly-licensed nurses include Lenneth Jane Abundo, Crismarfel Adame, Khim Dorothy Alcarde, Mary Rose Amper, Licca May Andrada (Cum Laude), Fate Carmela Baselio, Aimah Cabugatan, Raven Catipay, Emmylisa Cato, Cathyrine Ceria (Cum Laude).

Completing the list are Gwendolene Yzavelle Cruz, Grace Eria, Maria Leorita Escala, Raul Escasinas, Jr., Ara Regine Bianca Festin, Jammy Ann La Compte, Jemima Keshia Laynesa, Kishie Ann Mabbagu, Jasmine Maqui, Melissa Jane Murao, April Joy Presto, Maria Genina Siriban, Patricia Ann Villanueva, Anne Bernadette Macalindong, and Junna Lee Plant.

Successful examinees are advised to register online from July 3 and 12 on the PRC website for the issuance of their professional identification card and certificate of registration.

At present, UMak COAHS offers various undergraduate degrees “• Bachelor of Science in Nursing, BS Radiologic Technology, BS Pharmacy with enhancements in Pharmaceutical Marketing, and Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technology. COAHS graduate degree programs are Master of Arts in Nursing, Master of Science in Radiologic Technology, and Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management.

In the June 2018 nursing board, UMak attained a 75 percent overall passing rate, with a 100 percent passing rate for its first-time examinees. For both 2017 and 2018, the university posted a 100 percent passing rate in the Pharmacists Licensure Examination.

In 2018, COAHS-CON piloted its Japan internship program for qualified nursing students. The first two interns who underwent the program were each granted with roundtrip airfare, a 300-hour Nihonggo and socio-cultural lecture program, meal and accommodation allowances, and a monthly living allowance of 65,000 JPY during the internship.
