Veteran lawyer Rene Sarmiento will head the election committee that will supervise the coming elections of the Philippine Olympic Committee on July 28.

The executive board of the POC named Sarmiento to the post following yesterday’s special meeting at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

“These are one of the two resolutions that we passed today. And that’s the composition of the election commission,” said spokesman and board member Robert Mananquil.

Last year, Sarmiento was chair of election watchdog Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting for five years.

But Sarmiento later resigned to recover from a head surgery he had following an accident.

Before heading the PPCRV, Sarmiento served as Commission on Elections commissioner for seven years.

The executive board also named NCAA management committee member, Fr. Victor Calvo as part of the POC elecom.

They will also have a representative from the Philippine Disputes Resolution Center, an arbitration group formed by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce.

The executive board has also resolved to take this matter up before the POC extraordinary general assembly on July 18 at the Manila Golf and Country Club in Makati.

The decisions made during the executive board meeting is among the first steps that the POC has taken in preparing for the coming elections on July 28.

Acting president Joey Romasanta is expected to preside over the extraordinary general assembly meeting in 10 days.

The others presiding are former president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr., IOC representative Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, Robert Mananquil of billiards and snooker, Julian Camacho of wushu, Jonee Go of canoe/kayak, Prospero Pichay of chess and Jeff Tamayo of soft tennis.
