“Sinigang”—the sour yet savory Filipino traditional dish—retained its billing as the Best Soup in the world, at least according to the website TasteAtlas.

For its 2021 Awards, TasteAtlas said “Sinigang” topped the soup category with a 4.63 rating, beating the Ciorbă de fasole cu afumătură of România (4.55) and Shoyu Ramen of Japan (4.54).

Rounding out the top 5 were Mercimek çorbası of Turkey and Japan’s Tonkotsu Ramen.

TasteAtlas also listed Tortang Talong, Lumpiang Shanghai and Sinigang na Baboy as some of the best dishes of Filipino cuisine.

The website also named Locavore and Sentro 1771 as among the restaurants that serve good sinigang.

The Aristocrat, Balay Dako, Sebastian’s Ice Cream, Locavore and Good Taste were among the website’s recommended Filipino restaurants.

Last year, TasteAtlas, a website dedicated to celebrating traditional food from all over the world, also gave its nod to the Pinoy dish as the world’s best-rated vegetable soup.

It described sinigang as a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine “with its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country.”

Meanwhile, in the website’s list of World’s Best Cuisines, Filipino cuisine ranked 19th among 50 countries, trailing the top 3 of Italian, Greek and Spanish cuisines.

TasteAtlas bills itself as “an encyclopedia of flavors, a world atlas of traditional dishes, local ingredients, and authentic restaurants.”

“We have cataloged over 10,000 foods and drinks, and there are dozens of thousands yet to be researched and mapped. The popular ones, as well as the forgotten tastes and aromas of every city, region, and village in the world,” it added.
