The Taguig City government paid tribute to the Philippine Women’s National Football Team after its fruitful campaign in the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Mayor Laarni Cayetano said the local government initiated the motorcade and meet-and-greet events to honor the remarkable achievements and determination of Filipinas.
“This year marks many significant milestones for Filipinas, the Philippines women’s national football team, as they made their debut on FIFA Women’s World Cup. When Sarina Bolden scored a header goal on July 25, 2023 vs New Zealand, Filipinas forever etched their name on HERstory. It secured the country’s first goal and first win on the prestigious World Cup,” said Cayetano.
“We are one with the entire country in celebrating this remarkable feat. We are beyond proud of their achievements and are looking forward to what’s in store in the future for these trailblazers in women’s sports,” she added.
Amidst the exuberant cheers and resounding applause of football enthusiasts and supporters, the motorcade went around BGC and made its way to High Street and Uptown.
The athletes graciously shared their team jerseys with people waiting for them during their stroll through the streets.
Culminating at the Ayala Malls Market!Market! Central Plaza, Filipinas were welcomed by Mayor Cayetano, Vice Mayor Arvin Alit, and members of the City Council before the short program and press conference.
Filipinas Team Defender, Sofia Harrison, radiated inspiration as she shared an advice for aspiring young players: “Keep dreaming. Keep believing. Trust the process and trust God. And most importantly, have fun with it.”
Senator Pia Cayetano, who personally cheered the national squad in New Zealand, was also present in the Meet and Greet and again expressed her wholehearted support to the athletes.
A unique opportunity was extended to supporters, affording them the chance to not only applaud the team’s triumphs but also to have their football merchandise signed by the Filipinas team.
The historic victory clinched by the Filipinas in the prestigious FIFA Women’s World Cup served as a source of inspiration for countless Filipinos, particularly the youth, as they showcased Filipino talent in the global stage.
