There have been no reported Filipino casualties after a building collapsed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last Friday, May 31, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac announced on Sunday, June 2, that the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Jeddah is closely monitoring the search and rescue operations at the collapse site.

“Our Migrant Workers Office in Jeddah visited the incident site and several nearby hospitals to check for any Filipinos taken there for treatment. No Filipinos were reported to have been injured,” Cacdac said.

At least eight people have been rescued from the debris of the collapsed building, the Saudi Gazette reported.

Thirteen (13) apartments across five floors in the Al-Faisaliah district in central Jeddah were reportedly damaged. Rescue efforts to save trapped individuals were sustained until early Friday morning, it said.

Preliminary investigations showed that maintenance work within the basement of the building caused the collapse.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense in Jeddah released a statement saying the collapse happened along the Al-Faisaliah district, a densely populated district.

Cacdac emphasized that the MWO-Jeddah made a commitment to continue monitoring the situation.

The office is keeping communication lines open with local police, medical, and emergency services to ensure the continued safety of Filipinos in the area.

“MWO-Jeddah will provide updates to the DMW Central Office as necessary,” Cacdac assured.
