Liza Diño and Ice Seguerra star in groundbreaking LGBTQIA+ play
In celebration of LGBT Pride Month, prominent LGBTQIA+ couple Liza Diño and Ice Seguerra are headlining a play titled Choosing (Not A Straight Play). Dr. Anton Juan directs the two-person act, which will premiere at the Power Mac Spotlight Blackbox Theater, Circuit, Makati.
Choosing (Not A Straight Play), according to Dr. Juan, promises to deliver a compelling “story about love” that transcends gender. The play, penned by Diño with additional monologues by Seguerra, draws deeply from their personal journeys and the broader experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The original production delves into themes of identity, love, and the courage to remain true to oneself, while also touching on seldom-discussed topics such as the challenges faced by couples undergoing medical transitions.
“This landmark production is expected to challenge perspectives and foster a greater understanding and celebration of diverse human experiences. The main conflict in Choosing is a trans couple’s decision about whether they’re ready for a medical transition,” said Diño during the play’s intimate press conference.
She elaborated on the story, explaining why there’s a need for it to be told: “This is something that’s not often discussed, even among supportive couples. I am extremely supportive of my spouse’s identity as a trans man, and I celebrate that. But we are both afraid of the unknown that comes after the transition.”
Seguerra emphasized the importance of representation and understanding in their narrative.
“Because of this story, you get some shared experiences that somehow make people understand the challenges trans people face daily,” he explained.
The OPM icon also addressed the intention behind the play, clarifying: “These are stories that should be told. We are not trying to be controversial; that’s not the intention.”
Seguerra also expressed the significance of sharing such personal stories with a broader audience.
“We wanted to share this story because we believe that stories like these, which are normally not discussed, need to be brought to light. Many people will be able to say, ‘I’m not alone; I’ve gone through that too.’ Knowing that you’re not experiencing this alone and that it’s a shared experience can actually make you feel better,” Seguerra underscored.
“We’re sharing a part of our souls with the audience. It’s about the journey to find love, acceptance, and happiness in our society,” Diño added.
The couple said that they hope this play will help people understand the experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community.
“In this play, we’ll see that we have more in common than differences,” they said.
