Cotabato City – In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, a young voice is emerging, driven by a passion for education, community engagement, and social justice.

Hannan, a 16-year-old student leader from Cotabato City, is inspiring her peers and community members alike with her unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient future.

Raised with strong family values, she remains determined to raise awareness about the importance of preparedness in their area. “These challenges only strengthen my resolve to make a difference,” she shares.

Hannan’s journey as an advocate began amidst the recurring threats of disasters caused by natural hazards in Cotabato City. Inspired by her desire to help her community overcome these challenges, she became interested in the concept of resilience. She recognized that by equipping her community with the knowledge and tools to prepare for and respond to disasters, they could become more self-sufficient and resilient in the face of adversity.

Hannan’s involvement in various community initiatives, including workshops on Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) organized by girls’ rights organization Plan International Pilipinas, has equipped her with valuable skills to promote resilience. She has learned how to share important information about the risks their community faces and how to build trust among their neighbors.

Beyond the technical skills she has acquired, Hannan has also gained a sense of purpose and belonging. “Meeting other young people who care about our community’s safety has been incredibly inspiring,” she shares. Through these experiences, she has seen herself grow from a shy student to a confident young leader.

“I feel deeply moved by the impact it has on others. It’s powerful to know that my experiences and words can inspire those around me. It makes me feel like I have a purpose—to encourage and uplift others who may be facing similar challenges or dreaming of making [an impact]. It’s about letting others know that they are not alone in their struggles and that they too can find strength to overcome obstacles,” she adds.

Hanna’s engagement in community initiatives has not only shaped her as an individual but has also ignited a passion for social justice. She believes that youth participation is crucial in addressing the challenges facing their community. “We have fresh perspectives and the energy to bring about positive change,” she says.

As a Bangsamoro girl, Hannan is committed to being a “TINGOG” – a voice for change and a shield for what is right. She dreams of a future where women and girls are free to pursue their dreams without fear of discrimination. “Together, we can build a world where every girl can thrive and make her mark, no matter her background or beliefs,” she declares.

Hannan’s journey is a testament to the power of youth in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future. Her unwavering commitment, coupled with her passion for community engagement and social justice, makes her a beacon of hope for her generation.

For Hannan, the future holds endless possibilities. In the face of crisis, she stands strong—not just for herself, but for all the girls who dream of a safer tomorrow.

Editor’s note: Hannan is a girl advocate involved in Plan International Pilipinas’ Urban Nexus project, which works to build disaster- and climate-resilient cities by and for young people. Her story, along with those of other girls, is what Plan International Pilipinas aims to highlight for this year’s International Day of the Girl, an annual celebration that aims to bring the world’s attention to the experiences and challenges faced by girls and young women.
