The University of the Philippines-Diliman has chosen a new chancellor, a mathematician, for 2020 until 2023.

UP president Danilo Concepcion, UP Board of Regents co-chairperson, said Dr. Fidel Nemenzo, the current UP-Diliman vice chancellor for research and development, will replace Dr. Michael Tan.

Nemenzo is the 10th UP-Diliman chancellor.

The Board of Regents came up with a resolution last Feb. 3 during its 1,350th meeting after a thorough selection process conducted by a multi-sectoral search committee.

“Our victory is the victory for all of us. I know you are all here not to fight for me but to fight for UP. You are here for academic freedom [and] democratic governance, [and] for the voice of the community to be heard in important decisions of the BoR,” Nemenzo told the students and faculty members.

“I am looking forward to your participation and cooperation amid the challenges we will about to face. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Long live UP!” Rio N. Araja

The new UP-Diliman chancellor has earned his degree in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UP-Diliman in 1985, and his Master and Doctor of Science in Mathematics degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, in 1992 and 1998, respectively.

He is a professor of the UP Institute of Mathematics since 1992.
