Mel George Faitriz Cadano of College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills defeated Mapua's Yureeh Panganiban in the junior’s elimination round of the NCAA Season 96 online chess competition last Wednesday.

Cadano, 16, assured himself of a spot in the Round of 16 while ousting Panganiban.

Cadano joins FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz of Letran in the next round of the knockout stage. Daluz topped last season's MVP Gal Brien Palasigue of San Beda last Tuesday.

The eliminations, aired over the league's new television partner GTV Channel 11 of GMA-7, will last until Friday.

Round of 16 action will commence on July 10-11, while the quarterfinals will be played on July 12-14. The semifinals will be held on July 15, while the final is set July 17.

The seniors' tournament, on the other hand, will start on July 18.

Season 96 hosted by Letran has been shortened and physical tournaments were barred because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It recently concluded with taekwondo’s poomsae and speed kicking competitions.
