One green step at a time

Personal care giant L’Oreal continues its course toward green beauty with the launch of Garnier’s One Green Step Movement.

A recent study by Garnier reveals 90 percent of Filipinos want to lead a sustainable lifestyle, but only 10 percent are doing it because many find it “difficult, expensive, and intimidating”.

“We hope to break barriers that truly make sustainability easy and accessible for everyone to take that first green step. We want to empower consumers to make better choices in terms of the product that they use and the action they take on a daily basis,” said Josteen Vega, marketing manager of Garnier Philippines, during the virtual launch of the brand’s campaign.

Plastic-free packaging

Echoing L’Oreal Luxe general manager Cary Co’s earlier statement that “sustainable packaging is the future”, Garner has partnered with Lazada to ship products ordered through the platform packed in RoHS-certified and toxic-free paper box sealed with water-infused kraft tape instead of the usual plastic tape.

The Green Parcel, used for shipping products bought on e-commerce platforms, is a toxic-free paper box sealed with kraft paper tape.

As an alternative to bubble wrap, the product will be placed in a recycled paper wrap which can be reused at least six times and disintegrates in water within 30 seconds.

The plastic-free packaging alternative, dubbed Green Parcel, started its Lazada roll out on August 6.

“Filipinos can enjoy the convenience of having their favorite skincare product items delivered right to their doorstep while also taking a step towards sustainability,” Vega enthused.

Garnier All-Star Kit

This is the second initiative of Garnier for e-commerce. In October 2020, they partnered with Shopee, Sain Bags, and EcoNest to launch the Green Parcel program, which has since saved 1,240 kilograms of plastic.

“Reducing our impact is not enough. We want to empower our business ecosystem and work with our suppliers to also help them transition to a more sustainable world,” said Isabel Falco, marketing director of Garnier and L’Oreal Paris.

Skincare for you, mangrove seedling for the planet

In a move to offset its carbon footprint, the skincare brand is donating one seedling to the women eco-warrior community maintaining the mangrove ecosystem in Baybay, Leyte for every purchase of Garnier All-Star Kit. The 1,799-peso set consists of the brand’s bestselling products.

MANGROVE WARRIORS. Garnier supports CORA Philippines’ WoMangrove Warriors program, a project led by women that raises awareness on the importance of mangroves in mitigating climate change.

Garnier collaborates with CORA (Communities Organized for Resource Allocation) to support the mangrove protection project WoMangrove Warrior.

The partnership endeavors to raise awareness on the importance of mangroves in mitigating climate change while also highlighting the huge role of women in leading, monitoring, and managing the mangrove ecosystem in Leyte.

The WoMangrove Warrior supports the goals of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a global effort to reverse the degradation of ecosystems in every continent.

“It’s not just one mangrove seedling, you are also supporting varied program goals which include security, livelihood, carbon sequestration, positive behavioral change, and improved local policies within the country,” said Cat Triviño, communications head of CORA.

Over 1,200 mangrove seedlings have been donated to WoMangrove warriors since the program started in June.
