Focus on recovery from oil spill, not on blame game – group

Governance watchdog Pinoy Aksyon appealed to environmentalists and the Philippine Coast Guard to stop pointing fingers over the oil spill incident off the coast of Limay, Bataan and instead focus on recovery efforts.

Pinoy Aksyon chairperson Bency Ellorin said Shogun Ships, the owner of the ill-fated MT Terra Nova, should be held accoutanble.

Elorin said local and the international maritime laws state that once cargo is loaded onto a vessel, the ship takes full ownership and responsibility.

“What happened was an accident so focus should be made on recovery,” said Ellorin.

Since MT Terra Nova, which was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel, sank on July 25, 2024, two more tankers also suffered the same fate.

The 39-meter motorized tanker “Jason Bradley” sank in the vicinity of Barangay Cabcaben in Mariveles, Bulacan while the motorized vessel MV Mirola 1 ran aground near the shores of Mariveles and was found tilted to its side.

“Lessons should be learned and end the preventable and irreversible damage to the environment,” Ellorin said.
