President Marcos inks Seafarer’s Magna Carta into law

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers on Monday, a key legislative priority for his administration.
This legislation, also known as Republic Act 12021, aims to safeguard the rights of Filipino seafarers and ensure compliance with international maritime standards.
Marcos had previously certified the measure as urgent in September 2023, since it delineates the roles of government agencies and stakeholders to enhance accountability and efficiency in protecting seafarers’ rights.
Key provisions include rights to safe working conditions, fair treatment, legal representation, and immediate medical assistance for seafarers.
It also establishes duties for seafarers to adhere to their employment contracts and perform their responsibilities diligently.
This comprehensive framework seeks to bolster the welfare of Filipino seafarers and their families while promoting their contributions to the global maritime industry.
The signing ceremony occurred in the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañang Palace, highlighting the law’s significance.
