SM Megamall is set to undergo a major renovation. The challenge lies in executing this transformation while accommodating its daily foot traffic of nearly a million visitors, making it one of the busiest malls in the country and in the world. The mall will remain fully operational throughout the process.
According to a source from SM, similar successful renovations were previously carried out at SM Mall of Asia, minimizing disruptions to mallgoers. This approach will be replicated at SM Megamall, ensuring seamless construction that enhances rather than interrupts the mall experience.
“We’ve done some major renovations at SM Mall of Asia, too, but the construction proceeded as if no major renovations were occurring. We will implement the same scheme at SM Megamall,” a source from SM told Manila Standard Life. “You’ll see pavements and a few walls, but we’ll ensure that the mall experience for our patrons remains uninterrupted.”
Located on a sprawling 10-hectare property in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City, the country’s third-largest mall will begin its significant transformation this month. Expect substantial changes that will redefine the shopping and leisure landscape.
Designed by Benoy, the architectural firm behind renowned projects such as Icon Siam in Thailand and Jewel Changi in Singapore, SM Megamall’s new aesthetic draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the Philippines as the “country of a thousand islands.” Aptly named “Crystal Islands, this visionary design integrates nature-inspired elements throughout, creating a unique retail environment within the Ortigas Business District. Anticipate expansive green spaces seamlessly blending with the mall’s interior.
The redevelopment includes the addition of 20,000 square meters of leasable space, enriching the shopping and dining options. Visitors can look forward to brighter, wider hallways, more open spaces, and higher ceilings, enhancing the overall ambiance. Parking facilities have been expanded, providing over 1,000 additional slots to accommodate increased visitor traffic.
A highlight of the renovation is Level 5’s air-conditioned garden, featuring state-of-the-art ETFE roofing technology. This innovative space will bring an outdoor feel indoors, complete with lush greenery, natural light, and tranquil water features—a perfect setting for relaxation, dining, and leisure activities.
Movie enthusiasts will be delighted by the all-new cinemas, equipped with cutting-edge technology for an unparalleled viewing experience. The cinema complex will feature seven theaters, two Director’s Club theaters, and a large-format cinema designed for special event screenings.
